The last James Bond film, Skyfall, is the only flick in the spy film franchise to have touched the one billion mark on the box office. Outside of numbers, Skyfall took audiences back in time, but, according to director Sam Mendes, it was just the beginning. “Bond has been rebooted at the end of the movie.

This is only the beginning of the story The Bond creation myth never happened. I felt there was an opportunity there: What made him? And who were the people who affected him along the way?

You’re sort of telling the story backwards of how Bond became Bond,” Mendes told EW in a recent interview. In fact, it wouldn’t be unfair to say that for the upcoming Bond film, Spectre, Mendes is going allout, not just with the rebooted story but also the cast, which now includes Ralph Fiennes as M, the head of MI6, Monica Bellucci as Lucia Sciarra and Léa Seydoux as Doctor Madeleine Swann.

In another video interview, Mendes, who also directed Skyfall, explained his reasons for casting the gorgeous Monica Belluci in the role of a widow of a nefarious criminal. “I just thought, well Monica Bellucci. It makes sense with the story, it makes sense with the ages of the characters we’re dealing with and she’s an incredibly seductive presence in life and in the movie, and I’m thrilled she’s in it.” In addition to the new characters, Skyfall’s Naomie Harris and Ben Whishaw will reprise their roles of Moneypenny and Q, respectively.

The film, which marks Daniel Craig’s fourth outing as James Bond, will also feature Sherlock’s Moriarty, Andrew Scott as Max Denbigh, the head of the Centre for National Security. The biggest coup for the film is the casting of Christopher Waltz who stars as the head of the shadowy organisation, Spectre.
