For fans of James Cameron’s Avatar, there is some good news: Avatar 2 finally has a release date.

All this and more was revealed by James Cameron in an interview with Montreal Gazette. According to the Academy-Award winning filmmaker, fans can expect a trio of sequels, starting from Christmas 2017 when the first Avatar follow-up comes out. This will be followed by two more sequels, opening in 2018 and 2019.

Talking to Montreal Gazette about the trio of sequels and how these are relatable, director Cameron revealed: “At least, that’s what we’ve announced. But I don’t consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart. I call it a meta-narrative that runs across the three movies. Each film stands alone, but it also tells one much larger story.”

For Avatar 2, Cameron has reportedly roped in a whole new team of collaborators including Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver and Shane Salerno, who will be working on the upcoming chapters of the franchise.

“It’s been about a two-year task. We’ve finished all the creatures and the landscapes, and the new worlds within the world of Pandora that you see. The writing is ongoing, but almost finished. Technical development is done. Stages are done. Infrastructure. So we’re really poised to start after the first of the year,” he added.

Where little is known about the plot, Cameron revealed that the sequels will introduce ‘whole new worlds, habitats, and cultures’. That means interested viewers will be introduced to some really unique and interesting alien species. As per media reports, Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, the protagonist of Avatar will be back for the sequels.
