2015 has proven to be a good year for Pakistani cinema. Not only did it see the highest number of releases since the so-called ‘revival’ in 2007 but a number of future projects either went on floors or were officially announced to take off soon. Joining the list is a film, tentatively titled, Balu-Mahi.
The film, which is said to be a rom-com will be helmed by one of television’s celebrated directors, Haissam Hussain, who can be credited with launching current sensation Fawad Khan in the local drama industry with Daastan – a love story based around the Pakistan-India partition – and is also famous for his comedy series Aunn Zara starring Osman Khalid Butt and Maya Ali. Joining hands with Haissam is Sadia Jabbar, the producer of Mera Naam Yousuf Hai.
The cast of Balu-Mahi is yet to be decided and will be revealed in the coming month as the project goes on floors in January 2016. Other big names of the industry associated with the project include DOP Saleem Daad of Jawani Phir Nahi Ani fame and music composer Sahir Ali Bagga.
The director of Balu-Mahi, Haissam Hussain, is the brain behind one of television’s most popular comedies, Aunn Zara.
While not much has been revealed of the story, we hope it meets the benchmark set by its predecessors like Na Maloom Afraad and JPNA and is original in content instead of being inspired by Bollywood masala potboilers. With Haissam in the director’s chair, expectations are definitely high.
